This month's prompt: "A truth spoken before its time is dangerous." -Greek proverb

My story this month:

The Truth

“A truth spoken before its time is dangerous.” The words of my father rang in my ears. “The Prosecution would like to call miss Natria Levyic to the stand.” I shivered as I stood and headed towards the front of the courtroom.

"What is your name?" "Natria Levyic." I answered. It seemed odd that the attorney would ask my name after just announcing it. “Would you be so kind as to tell us what happened on the night in question?” The prosecuting attorney asked me, almost kindly. I said nothing; after all, I did have the right to remain silent, did I not? “Could you share with us what happened?” Silence. “Miss, if you choose not to speak, the truth will not be revealed. Now, if you please, we would like to hear what you have to say.”

I took a deep breath. It would not do to expose the truth just yet. “If you don’t mind, I choose to remain silent, as is my right.” “That is your decision?” I nodded. “It is.” But the attorney did not give up so easily. “Then the court will not hear what you have to say at this time?” “So it would seem.” His expression changed from one of questioning to one of resignation. “Very well. It appears that this witness will no longer be necessary to the trial at this point in time. Miss Natria Levyic is dismissed from the stand, with no further questions.”

I heaved a sigh of relief. I had managed to withhold the truth, and remain calm. Deep down, I knew that it may not have been the right thing to do in the eyes of the law, but it was not the opportune moment for the truth to be evinced. After all, the truth is given by God to us all in our time, in our turn. I reasoned with myself. Satisfied, I left the courthouse.

So there you have it! This time, I was able to make it quite a bit shorter than last month's. It was a bit harder this month. It took awhile for inspiration to hit me, but when it did, there was no question about what I was going to write about. I can't wait to see next month's prompt!

    1. The second to last sentence came from Les Mis, it seemed like the perfect place to put it.

Never fear, I have a post already written up of a dialog that my sister and I wrote, but I have to get my mom to approve it first.
