The Never-ending Night of No Sleep

September 15th, 2015

Our flight is at 6:00 am tomorrow.

6 am!

Which means, we have to be at the airport by 4:30 at the latest, it's an hour away, so we have to leave at 3:30, which means we have to get up at 2:30.

Kinda makes you wonder if four hours of sleep is worth it.

It usually isn't.

Especially since you can always sleep on the plane. It's about a 3 hour flight to LA, we'll arrive just in time for breakfast. Then, it's about a five hour flight to our final destination.

There is a five-hour time difference from us to Maui, they are five hours behind us. e.g. if it's 10 am here, it's 5 am there.

My math for the day: if I woke up at 8 today, I leave at 6 am tomorrow, I don't go to bed until 8pm Maui time (1am our time), that means I'll have stayed awake for about 41 hours.

And, I don't plan on drinking any coffee or soda. I may regret my decision later, but I want to see if I can do it.

Aunt Cendei offered to drive us to the airport, she arrived at about 3:15 am, and Dad was still frantically trying to figure out packing.

Everything went smoothly before the flight, breakfast was Burger King (*gasp* The Horror!) as soon as it opened (5 am).

The plane was okay, the seat backs were only about three inches thick, and the legroom was not roomy.

We arrived in LA around 7-8 am, their time. I was hungry enough to want second-breakfast,  so Dad let me get a yogurt parfait. Dad wasn't hungry, but bought everyone sandwiches/wraps for whenever lunch decided to be had. Christian wasn't hungry either, but decided he wanted a drink (of which, I had a sip. That was to be the last time any liquids passed my lips, until Mom treated Christian and me to a drink of our choice.)

Boarded the second flight with no problem. Christian and I shared a row with a stranger, while Dad was seated with a couple across the aisle. Originally, the stranger was to have the middle seat, but I took that seat, thinking that whoever was our row-mate would prefer the aisle seat. Said stranger proceeded to sleep throughout the bulk of the flight. If Christian or I needed/wanted to go to the bathroom, we'd have to wake the stranger up. We decided instead, to sleep, and see how that worked.

Between both flights, I slept probably around 3 hours. Christian slept closer to 5 or 6 hours. I have no idea how long Dad slept. So we obviously missed the 41 hour mark, but we will have not slept in a real bed for 41 hours.

We arrived in Maui, Hawaii at about 11:45ish am.

After leaving the plane, Dad pretty much left as soon as possible to get a rent car. Mom was to turn in her smaller car, and meet Christian and I at the baggage claim.

When Dad returned, we discovered a little stowaway in the back seat. Mia had joined the party. Mom had to go to Costco, so we dropped her off there, and then went to go get Jamba Juice.

After picking Mom up again, we drove to our condo, unpacked, and went to the beach. With the help of a one-weak head-start, Ava has built up an impressive collection of shells and sea-glass.

Am I jealous? Kinda. She found a DARK PURPLE PIECE OF GLASS!!! Light purple alone, has a finding rate of 1 in 250 people!

We are currently cycling through showers, and Mom is making spaghetti and meatballs. A movie will be watched at some point this evening.

I think my body clock is already adjusted, I don't fell tired enough to sleep at all.

    1. Actually, it wasn't that bad. I was just so excited, I was able to stay awake. I knew that if I slept too much, my body clock would be messed up for the next couple of days. :)

    1. Of course! I've already found lots of shells and sea-glass. Lydia has rolled her eyes at me many times today. I almost always find more than she does, and I'm the one that hasn't had a week's head start, and who also needs to have her eyes checked after the trip.

      Will do! :D

School starts for us in the next couple of days as well...
